Get Ahead of Changes to Inheritance Tax Regime
7 January 2026 • Sarah Medcraf
Davidson Chalmers Stewart Rural Partner and Moray Chamber of Commerce Director Henrietta "Hetty" Talbot has been speaking to The Scotsman to highlight the vital Inheritance Tax (IHT) changes set to take effect in April 2026.
Hetty outlines important restrictions that will apply to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR), which are likely to have significant implications for business owners, farmers, and property holders across the UK. Under the new rules, reliefs on qualifying business and agricultural assets will be capped, while lifetime gifts and pensions may also be affected, meaning proactive estate planning will be crucial to minimise future tax liabilities.
She emphasises that these changes could impact not only individual estates but also family-owned businesses and agricultural operations, making early planning essential to protect wealth and ensure smooth succession. Individuals, families, and business owners are therefore encouraged to review their current arrangements and seek professional advice to understand how the reforms may affect them.
