Elgin City FC’s Pitch Earns Scottish FA Gold Standard
6 October 2025 • Sarah Medcraf
SEVEN YEARS AGO IT WAS DANGEROUS, NOW ELGIN CITY’S FOOTBALL PITCH IS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY.
City been awarded the Scottish FA’s Gold Standard for the prime condition of their Borough Briggs playing surface last season.
The park is currently in pristine state, with the club hailing the efforts of stadium manager Cecil Jack and his team of groundstaff.
Elgin City’s pitch hit the headlines for the wrong reasons in 2018 when they had a League 2 fixture against Cowdenbeath postponed over safety concerns, with large stones visible in one of the penalty areas.
Two years ago the surface was dug up and resurfaced, having fallen into a poor state in preceding campaigns.
A club spokesperson said: “Over the course of the season, referees are asked to grade the playing surfaces when they officiate and City's achieved the highest rating for 2024-25.
Stadium manager Jack thanked groundsmen Billy Beaton, Willie McDonald and Billy Miller, as well as a group of volunteers known as the Monday Forkers “for their tireless work which has helped the club achieve this standard”.
