Exploring the Benefits of Rail Freight for Scottish Businesses
7 September 2025 • Sarah Medcraf
AN IMPORTANT INITIATIVE FROM NETWORK RAIL IS WORKING WITH SCOTTISH BUSINESSES TO INCREASE THE MOVEMENT OF GOODS BY RAIL AND RAISE AWARENESS OF THE MANY BENEFITS RAIL FREIGHT CAN BRING TO SUPPLY CHAINS AND THE WIDER ECONOMY.
Logistics underpin Scotland’s economy, and how goods are moved has a direct impact on efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness. Network Rail is encouraging businesses across Scotland to explore how rail freight could integrate seamlessly into their transport solutions.
Rail freight offers a range of advantages:
- Reliable, agile, safe, and high-performing – ensuring goods get to their destination efficiently.]
- Environmentally sustainable – producing 76% less CO₂ per tonne compared to road, and 81% less particulate matter per tonne.
- Reduces road congestion and improves road safety – easing pressure on busy routes while supporting the transition to greener transport.

Last year alone, Scottish rail freight saved the equivalent of 52 million lorry miles, highlighting the scale of potential impact when more businesses make the switch. Per tonne moved, rail is 75% more carbon efficient than the equivalent road journey, making it a key contributor to helping companies meet their environmental targets.
Whether you are transporting pallets, containers, or bulk materials, rail can provide flexible and scalable solutions. With daily connections across the UK – including to and from England, Wales, and major ports – rail is positioned as the sustainable, efficient, and reliable transport choice.
Network Rail’s Scotland freight team is keen to support businesses in exploring the opportunities of rail and would welcome discussions with Chamber members who are curious about how rail freight could benefit their operations.
