Stagecoach - Employee tribute to former colleague by receiving his COVID 19 vaccination

19 March 2021 • Sarah Medcraf

A Stagecoach employee has paid tribute to his former colleague by receiving his COVID-19 vaccination at the Fiona Elcock Centre, Elgin.

The vaccination centre in Elgin is well known for being named after Fiona Elcock, a local immunisation nurse who died suddenly in 2020. But Fiona’s late husband, Tony Elcock, was a Bus Driver based at Elgin Depot, keeping the local communities connected by bus.

In the 16 years Malcolm Underwood has worked for Stagecoach many colleagues have become friends and fellow Driver, Tony Elcock was no different. Malcolm has now received his COVID-19 vaccination at the Fiona Elcock Centre and is encouraging others to do so when they are invited.

Commenting on the experience, Malcolm said: “I’ve found the last 12 months an extremely challenging time in my personal life and my work life but getting my vaccination invitation at the Fiona Elcock Centre was a very poignant moment. I’m sure it will be the same for more of the Drivers in Elgin as Fiona was married to our much loved colleague, Tony.”

“Anyone invited to get their vaccination at the Fiona Elcock Centre should absolutely take it. The setup is brilliant and the staff are fantastic, I was there for less than 30 minutes. I know both Fiona and Tony would have been extremely proud of both the vaccination service and the V1 shuttle bus running to the centre every 30 minutes.”

Peter Knight, Managing Director for Stagecoach Bluebird said: “We are proud to be running our V1 service connecting Elgin Bus Station to the Fiona Elcock Vaccination Centre. Our enhanced cleaning and social distancing on board makes using bus a safe and easy way to travel to your vaccination.”

Leader of Moray Council, Cllr Graham Leadbitter said: “The provision of the V1 shuttle bus to support vaccination rollout at the Fiona Elcock vaccination centre is very welcome and is providing a vital link for those reliant on public transport to get to vaccination appointments.

“Support for the vaccination rollout from both the public and private sector is vital to its success, including the important contribution of transport providers like Stagecoach.”

NHS Grampian Vaccination Team said: “We are delighted to have the support of the shuttle bus service from Elgin bus station to the vaccination centre on Edgar Road. Elgin bus station is the hub for many services across Moray so the shuttle bus leaving from here has linked most locations in Moray to the centre."

The V1 service operates every 30 minutes between 10am and 6.30pm, 7 days a week. Connections from other services across Moray are available at the Bus Station. The free Stagecoach mobile app allows you to track your bus and check how busy it is in advance.
