Sustaining Legacy: The Fourth-Generation of Gleaner Ltd

1 April 2024 • Sarah Medcraf

Established in 1954, Gleaner has not only weathered the storms of time but has flourished under the stewardship of four successive generations of visionary leaders. With a steadfast commitment to quality and reliability, founder R Young laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Scotland's fuel distribution landscape.

As the years passed and technology evolved, so too did Gleaner. The third generation, represented by Jane and Stephen Scott, ushered in an era of innovation and sustainability. Recognising the growing importance of technology spearheaded initiatives to reduce costs, carbon emissions and positioned Gleaner as a responsible corporate citizen.

Today, as Gleaner enters its fourth generation of family ownership and under the guidance of Jane and Stephen, Evan Scott, will continue the legacy of excellence and dedication. Armed with a deep respect for tradition and a forward-thinking mindset, Evan will lead Gleaner into the future, navigating challenges and seizing opportunities in an ever-changing industry landscape.

Evan believes that at the heart of Gleaner's success lies a commitment to its core values of integrity, reliability, and customer service.

“Gleaner has remained steadfast in its mission to deliver value to its customers while upholding the highest standards of conduct. I believe the key pillars of Gleaner’s future remains sustainability and innovation. Community engagement, embracing advanced technologies and Gleaner’s culture of continuous improvement and adaptation will be key. Gleaner has and will continue to place great importance on community engagement and support. Building partnerships and gaining valuable insights to customer needs and preferences can only contribute to long-term success. Investment in advanced technologies has enabled us to be the most efficient we can be with the resources available, and our culture of continuous improvement by fostering creativity, agility, and adaptability within the organisation will persist. Of course, monitoring industry trends, and staying ahead of regulatory changes will also be at the forefront of our sustainability and innovation focus”.

As Gleaner looks ahead to the next chapter in its storied history, the spirit of innovation and resilience that has defined the company for generations continues to guide its path. With a focus on sustainability, diversification, and community engagement, Gleaner is poised to not only survive but thrive in the years to come, leaving an indelible mark on Scotland's fuel distribution sector. In an age where corporate longevity is increasingly rare, Gleaner stands as a beacon of continuity and perseverance, a testament to the enduring power of family, tradition, and entrepreneurship.
