Swinney Holds 'Constructive' Scotch Whisky Tariff Talks With Trump

15 September 2025 • Sarah Medcraf

SCOTLAND'S WHISKY INDUSTRY EYES TARIFF RELIEF FOLLOWING HIGH-LEVEL TALKS

Scottish First Minister John Swinney has held "constructive" discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, advocating for the removal of the 10% tariff on Scotch whisky exports to the United States. The Scotch Whisky Association estimates that these tariffs are costing the industry £4 million per week.

The meeting, which lasted nearly an hour, also touched on broader trade relations and international issues. Swinney emphasised the mutual benefits of a "zero for zero" tariff agreement, highlighting that both Scotch whisky and U.S. bourbon industries stand to gain from such a deal. Swinney's proactive approach has been credited with bringing the issue of whisky tariffs to the forefront of trade discussions.

While the UK Government holds the responsibility for finalising trade agreements, Swinney's efforts have laid the groundwork for potential tariff relief. The upcoming state visit by President Trump to the UK presents a critical opportunity to advance these discussions.

For businesses in Moray and across Scotland, the outcome of these talks could have significant implications for the whisky sector, a cornerstone of the nation's economy. In partnership with Scottish Chambers, we continue to monitor developments and will keep members informed of any progress on this matter.
